C'est en 1860 que Giovanni Panerai ouvre sa boutique horlogère, à Florence. Son magasin est doublé d'un atelier qui deviendra la première école d'horlogerie de la ville. La marque est généralement connue pour avoir été le fournisseur officiel de la Marine italienne, ce qui donné naissance à des modèles mythiques aux lignes inimitables tels que les Luminor Marina ou les Radiomir (dont le nom est tiré de la matière luminescente à base de radium brevetée en 1916 par Panerai). La Marine se montrera de plus en plus exigeante, ce qui poussera Panerai à travailler en collaboration avec Rolex durant les années 1940 afin de se fournir en mouvements de haute qualité.
It was back in 1860 that Giovanni Panerai opened his watch store in Florence. His store was paired with a watchmaking workshop which will become the first watchmaking school in the city. The brand is generally known to have been the official supplier of the Italian Navy, which gave birth to mythical models with inimitable lines such as the Luminor Marina or the Radiomir (whose name is taken from the luminescent material made from radium patented in 1916 by Panerai). The Navy will be more and more demanding, which will push Panerai to work in collaboration with Rolex during the 1940s in order to supply itself with high quality movements.
